Grow a Tropical Paradise in Your Own Back Yard

We did!

We went from this to this in six months
The garden "before" The garden "after"

We're such palm tree fanatics that we moved from Portland, Oregon, to Corpus Christi, Texas, so that we could grow more varieties of palms. We are members of the International Palm Society and the Palm Society of South Texas. My name is Jana and my husband is Gary. We hope to inspire and educate gardeners through this site. A beautiful garden is tremendously rewarding, and we want all gardeners, new or experienced, to go out and dig in the dirt! ("It's not dirt, it's soil!" my husband chastises.  Whatever.)

When we arrived at our new Corpus Christi house in December 1996, the only place we had to sit was the swing set in the back yard. Delighted to have escaped the winter in Oregon, we began visualizing the changes that would transform our ordinary back yard into a tropical paradise. There was really only one problem with our house -- not one single palm tree anywhere. Having left a substantial collection of Trachycarpus fortunei and other palms at our Portland house, we jumped into immediate action.

Listed below are links and thumbnail pictures of our progress in 1997. Each thumbnail represents a link to a larger image and more detailed information. We have 22 palm trees in the front yard alone. And do not despair if you live in a climate cooler than south Texas. We achieved a tropical look in Portland, Oregon, too.

This page is organized so that the newest additions appear toward the top of the list. You may skip around randomly, or you can scroll through chronologically by starting at the link named "Getting Started." Each page has a link to the next one in line. Each page has images, so if you get tired of waiting for them to load, you can hit the "stop" button on your browser so that just the text and the links will show.
