Glyn Whiddon
of Stuart Place Nursery in Harlingen graciously hosted
a palm
sale on April 21, 2001. The sale was a great success both in
palm sales and
recruitment of new members. Richard Travis and Glyn Whiddon deserve
a big
chunk of credit for attracting new members. Richard, our dedicated
and
talented editor, produced a high quality reference book as the
society's
first quarterly bulletin.
Each page contains a species, color photograph,
and cultivation preferences
of palms particularly well suited for landscaping in south Texas.
Glyn
facilitated the production of this outstanding piece of work
by purchasing a
color laser printer which is capable of all the necessary tasks.
Richard
had been previously hampered by a printer which was not adequately
suited
for printing on heavier stock needed for the cover. Richard,
you really did
a great job! Glyn, thank you for making this new reference book
possible!
Anyone who has procrastinated in renewing membership, or joining
for the
first time, this is the best time ever to be a PSST member.
Glyn busy at work |
The palm sale itself was a resounding success,
due in large part to an
auction in the morning and in the afternoon. Of particular interest
were
some beautiful specimens of Cyrtostachys renda,
the sealing wax palm.
People bidding on the palms were made aware of their finicky
nature outside
their native habitat of Malaysia. These are palms which cannot
tolerate
cold one bit, but their amazing beauty is worthy of taking a
risk.

Other palms, cycads and plants sold included
Dioon spinulosum, Dypsis decaryi
(Triangle palm), Ptychosperma lineare (McArthur
palm), Serenoa repens, Phoenix roebelenii,
Phoenix pusilla, Caryota, Washingtonia
filifera x robusta, Cocothrinax, Sabal
mexicana, Sabal minor, Cycas revoluta,
Wodyetia bifurcata (Foxtail palm),
Sabal mauritiformis, Beaucarnea (Ponytail
palm), Hyophorbe verschaffeltii (Spindle palm),
Trachycarpus, Chamaerops, Syagrus,
Livistona merilli, Rhapis excelsa.
Glyn was our auctioneer while Bill Baker and Jana Meiser scribbled
hasty notes trying to keep up with the activity.

Recruiting new members |
Several members brought palms from their
own collections to sell that day
too. Members who participated in the palm sale were asked to
donate a palm
to the auction. Glyn went above and beyond the call of duty in
this regard
too, donating several specimens. At the end of the day, Stuart
Place
Nursery and Ned's Nursery donated 10% of their palm
sale proceeds to the
society.
