Ed wins a grass skirt, a very tight grass skirt.  Must be all that dessert he ate.

A record turnout of nearly 40 people attended the Fourth Annual Magyar Spectacular Barbecue and Chat Session in Santa Rosa, on Saturday, May 15, 1999. This is always a special meeting, since the Magyar home is such a special place to meet, and wander, and look and enjoy the fruits of Thad and Alice's labors over the past 15 years. Although it is always hard to believe that anything more can be added, the Magyars manage each year to improve the property, both "vegetatively" and structurally.

Thad continues to add palms to his collection, and has extended several concrete walkways so that it is now possible to visit almost all of the sections of the yard in the dry comfort of a sidewalk. A number of new members attended, along with some who have been members before but have not been able to attend a meeting: Mr. and Mrs. Romeo Montalvo, of Brownsville, Nancy Hada of Rockport, and charter members Jo Adkins and Mary Ford, of Beeville and Weslaco. It was great to see so many of the people who attend infrequently.

Alice and Thad Magyar prepared an absolutely enormous pork loin as the centerpiece of the meal, barbecued to perfection. With so many people, the number of side dishes was overwhelming with a perfect balance of vegetables, starches, snacks, desserts, etc. One member brought a huge tray of dried dates and figs which turned out to be an (appropriate) hit. The Magyar property lends itself to a kind of outdoor table hopping, since there are so many areas into which one may settle. And table hop people did, talking with the various groups, and getting to know the new members.

Thad treated us all to a game of "pin the monkey on the palm tree", and awarded prizes appropriate to a palm society meeting. Ed Ladd won the palm twine skirt, but declined to demonstrate its use further than to put it on over his clothing. An opportunity missed, here.

Our new chairman, Bill Baker, held a brief business meeting, and outlined plans for the meeting in Austin at which time we will meet with a State planner to discuss the planting of palms at the Capitol. He also talked about the Fall tour of the French palm organization, Manurevah, to Florida and South Texas. We will be hosting a part of their tour in this area. Treasurer John Dillard provided a financial report, and we are in relatively good shape this year.

Although Glyn Whiddon had to leave to attend to his nursery business, he presented a check for almost $250.00 to the group...the proceeds from the March palm sale. This brings our treasury to a more comfortable level, and assures that announcements and Bulletins will continue for the remainder of the year. Norman Sluis suggested instituting life memberships. After some discussion, the matter was tabled for additional study. A great idea, but there was little consensus on the amount such memberships would be.

Toward the end of the meeting, many members walked across the road to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sparks to look at new developments in their large estate. More palms have been planted, and extensive construction has taken place in the back yard. A very beautiful place...and our thanks to them for allowing us to walk through their palm garden. A great meeting, as always, and our most sincere thanks to Alice and Thad for all of their trouble in putting it together.
