John Dillard gets a handmade lamp with a handpainted lampshade
Despite the hectic holiday season, PSST members travelled from the Valley, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Beeville, Ingleside, and Rockport to attend our third annual Christmas party.  Our tradition is to exchange "palm related" gifts.  What's a palm related gift?  All kinds of things!
Ellen and Charlie Fehrenkamp got a calendar of tropical islands.  John Dillard got a lamp made by Charlie with lampshade that Ellen painted with palm tree leaves.  Tamara Haygood received a pewter palm tree pin.  Thad and Alice got homemade palm jelly made by Don and Pat Kuehnl.  Other gifts included a palm tree nightlight, more calendars, and, of course, actual palm trees!

Bob Harris starts the auction with homemade jelly made from fruit of Butia capitata

California members John and Christine Ingwerson donated 15 small palms to PSST for our Christmas party.  The assorted varieties include Chamaedorea hooperiana, Caryota ‘laoensis’, Caryota mitis, Chamaerops humilus var 'cerifera', Dypsis decipiens, and a cycad Dioon merolae.  Visit their website at http://www.palmcollector.com

We decided to auction five of the palms and distribute the remainder as additional gifts.  A jar of the palm jelly went into the auction.  Bob Harris was our auctioneer, and we swiftly added nearly $100 to our budget.  Our auctions are becoming more profitable than our annual palm sale each year, and the group decided to forego a sale in 2000.   Members decided to spend a little cash at each meeting and donate palms to ensure that our funds for the bulletin will be sufficient.

The group also discussed a memorial planting for Bill Bittle.  The art center in Rockport is a possible site, and the group decided that a selection of palms with one larger specimen of an unusual variety would be appropriate.

Many thanks to our hosts Ed Ladd and John Dillard for another memorable Christmas party.  John fixed King Ranch chicken and chairman Bill Baker arrived with five dozen tamales for a fabulous Mexican holiday feast.

Our new editor Richard Travis surprised us all by delivering finished copies of the winter PSST bulletin.  It is the first issue since our founder Bill Bittle passed away on November 6th.  Richard developed a new format, and bulletin will continue to be a publication that makes our group proud.  Thanks, Richard, for a job well done.
