January 2000 Meeting in Bayview, Texas (part 2)

[Bayview Part 1]  [Bayview Part 2]  [Bayview Part 3]  [Spanish]

Fabulous food!We feasted on brisket, sausage, beans, salads, punch, and desserts galore.   Members Jerry Hollier and Joe Baldwin of Brownsville's Palm Court Restaurant were there in spirit by sending their famous "Better than sex" chocoloate dessert.  Almost forty members old and new travelled far and wide to attend this meeting.   Several Houston residents travelled the furthest.  Other members travelled from San Antonio, Victoria, Rockport, Ingleside, Corpus Christi, and of course, the valley itself.

Many new faces appeared at the January meeting, and some of our visitors decided to join that day.  We often have no plans for a formal business meeting, and two of our newest members Jim and Evelyn Sommerfrucht were patiently waiting for the meeting to "begin."  Thad Magyar had two things to mention, so he immediately was nominated to conduct our "meeting".

Caryota mitis
New member Deb Cox of Brownsville and Jana Meiser admire Caryota mitis seeds in several stages of development.

Our 10-minute meeting Thad told the group about a proposal from Kapoho Palms from Hawaii.   They are a mail order nursery who has offered to donate palms to our occasional auctions -- all we need to do is pay shipping.  The proposal met with enthusiastic approval.  Thad also mentioned the quest for a name for our journal and offered "Palmas Tree", "The Palm Leaves" or "The Palm Leaf".   Richard Travis has received a number of suggestions already and plans on compiling the list for review soon.

On to the next garden
Off to the Sommerfrucht's!

Then everyone received a map with directions to our next destination -- the Summerfrucht's.  They live on the other side of the resaca from Ruth.   It was a beautiful south Texas day -- a bit windy, but unseasonably warm.
