Jim and Evelyn Sommerfrucht were kind enough to invite PSST for a visit. They had some cultivars of Phoenix dactylifera in bloom and a Syagrus romanzoffiana in fruit. Two of their smallest palms attracted considerable attention -- Bismarckia nobilis. They are juveniles right now, and of course, the color is most unusual. One member was admiring them and thinking of a place to put one in her own yard. Within five minutes, three other members joined in her admiration with practically identical remarks -- "Ooh, Bismarckia nobilis! Boy, they sure get big!" |

Papaya and mystery fruit that's not quite a grapefruit |
Then the tour of the citrus grove began. The Sommerfruchts have orchards of magnificent fruit, including starfruit, tangerines, oranges, papaya, and grapefruit. They also have a mystery fruit which looks like a grapefruit but tastes a like a cross between a grapefruit and lemon with sugar. Absolutely delicious. It was so good that we spent more time sampling fruit than looking at palms. Imagine!
The meeting was over all too soon and everyone went their separate ways. Thank you, Ruth, for having us! And thank you, Jim and Evelyn, for letting us visit you too (and welcome to PSST).
