On May 20th, 2000, PSST members met at the Lone Star Restaurant in Harlingen as an alterative to our usual potluck. The excellent food comes in big portions at the Lone Star. They have an excellent room for our group of 20 people to visit and catch up on things since the last meeting. But enough about food. On with the palms! |
| Of particular interest a was donation made by Bill and Kelly Burhans of Houston. It was a gift from Bill Bittle to Bill Burhans when it lived in a gallon pot 10 years ago. Since that time, it has moved to a larger pot several times. The Burhans generously donated this magnificent and rare palm to the memorial fund for Bill Bittle. It takes some very special friends to donate such a beautiful specimen! Thank you Bill and Kelly! Bidding was brisk between Gunter and Glyn. The final bid was $253, going to Glyn Whiddon. Thank you Glyn! Also donated for auction were Vietchia seedlings. Gunter Schmidt collected the seeds himself in the Cayman Islands and germinated them. Thank you Gunter. |

| PSST member Gary Meiser has started a webpage for the Bill Bittle Memorial Garden. You'll find pictures of the landscape drawings there. The memorial garden will be part of the brand new sculpture garden at the Rockport Center for the Arts. Construction began last spring. Planting should begin in August. |

Ellen Fehrenkamp and Carol Farrald |
From the restaurant, we caravaned to Carol Farrald's Palm Acres Nursery in
Elsa. Her impressive grove of Washingtonia is always a favorite. Members
combed through her greenhouses. Carol invites PSST to her nursery every year, and no
one ever leaves empty handed.

Gary Meiser served as the substitute auctioneer for the Syagrus silver form donated by Carol. This auction was also for the Bill Bittle Memorial Garden. The lucky winner of this bid was Ed Ladd. Thank you Carol! |
