June 2000 Meeting in San Benito, Texas

Charlie and Lana Vieh
Charlie and Lana Vieh, our hosts
Nearly 30 people attended the June Palm Society of South Texas meeting at Charlie and Lana Vieh's Bed and Breakfast in San Benito.  The Vieh's are hosts extraordinare, feeding the hungry palm enthusiasts with fajitas, homemade tortillas, guacamole, hot sauce and beans.  Members brought salads and desserts galore.  Running a bed and breakfast, the Viehs are well equipped to handle a crowd of people in their lovely abode.  Matching dishes, silverware, tablecloths and cloth napkins were above and beyond the call of PSST hosting duties!  Thank you Charlie and Lana for such royal treatment.  Grand buffet

Going to see the lake

Behind the Vieh's bed and breakfast is a small lake where Charlie is building an observation deck for birders.  We saw Rosiette spoonbills and many other birds that day.  In addition to palms, Charlie is quite knowledgeable about birds and butterflies.

Visitin'

Charlie and Lana's Bed and Breakfast sits on 15 acres of land just 3 miles from the Mexico border.   Many PSST members have fond memories from Charlie's guided tours into Mexico.   Visit their website at http://www.vieh.com for more information about their guided tours and accommodations.

Gotcha Thad!  Don't look so surprised!  We know you're going to eat every last bite of food on that plate!  ;-)

Bill Baker conducted a brief business meeting.  We discussed ordering more tshirts, and the group decided to consider new designs at the next meeting.   Anyone wishing to propose a new design may bring it to the July meeting, or contact an officer (emails listed at http://www.mahpro.com/psst).   An order for more shirts will be placed in August.

Jana Meiser announced the arrival of new seeds from the Montgomery Botanical Center.  This month they sent us Caryota rumphiana, Gastrococos crispa, and Archontophoenix alexandrae.

Bob Harris then gave an update of the Bill Bittle Memorial Garden.  The projected opening date is in September.  Bob will need some help with planning and planting the garden sometime in August.  Gary Meiser has created a Bill Bittle Memorial webpage with images of the architectural drawings and photos of the site construction.   Bob then conducted an auction of several Washingtonia filifera seedlings.
