Seeds for Ground Cover Plants
from the Digital Raingardens Online Seed Catalog

Important Note about starting Ground Cover Seeds: Ground Covers should be started as "plugs" inside in plug starting trays and then transplanted outside as plugs in order to establish a ground cover. You should not try to direct sow seeds outside, you will receive very poor results this way.  Direct sowing of these seeds will void our satisfaction guarantee that the seeds will germinate.

AW14 Lotus corniculatus Bird's Foot Trefoil

A good groundcover for poor soils, Lotus corniculatus is a common flowering plant native to grassland temperate Eurasia and North Africa. The common name is Bird's-foot Trefoil (or similar, such as "birdsfoot trefoil"), though the common name is often also applied to other members of the genus. It is also known in cultivation in North America as Birdfoot Deervetch.

It is a perennial herbaceous plant, similar in appearance to some clovers. The flowers develop into small pea-like pods or legumes. The name 'bird's foot' refers to the appearance of the seed pods on their stalk. There are five leaflets, but with the central three held conspicuously above the others, hence the use of the name trefoil. The height of the plant is variable, from 5-20 cm, occasionally more where supported by other plants; the stems can reach up to 50 cm long. It is typically sprawling at the height of the surrounding grassland. It can survive fairly close grazing, trampling and mowing. It is most often found in sandy soils. It Flowers from June until September.

The plant has had many common English names in Britain, which are now mostly out of use. These names were often connected with the yellow and orange colour of the flowers, e.g. 'eggs and bacon', 'butter and eggs'.

Often used in plantings because it is short and mixes well with wildflowers for increased attraction. This native grass has a wide range of colors which are various shades of blue and green hues. These colors turn to a striking bright red in fall and are are topped by fluffy silvery-white seedstalks. This native grass can reach heights of two to four feet tall and a patch of this waving in the wind is truly a wonderful sight for your landscape.

Little bluestem is a vigorous, long-lived native bunchgrass, widely distributed over the United States; but most prevalent in the Central and Southern Great Plains. It is usually found associated with big bluestem native grass. It is more drought resistant that big bluestem, and a smaller plant - usually not reaching over 3 feet. Leaves are up to 8 inches long, and not over 0.25 inch wide. It furnishes dependable grazing and cured hay, but is not highly palatable. It is especially valuable for erosion control.

Plants have also been used commercially in perfumes. Leaves are sometimes used to flavor teas and cold fruit drinks. Leaves are also used to make May wine, a punch made from white wine flavored with woodruff, orange and pineapple.
