It has unusual shaped leaves. The bark of this tree was used to make cloth, shoes and helmets in Polynesia, as togas for the wealthy in Europe and as loin cloths for warriors on some islands. Its name also comes from the red fruits that closely resemble mulberries and, according to Sturtevant's Edible Plants of the World, are quite edible.
